If your resin project isn’t curing properly, don’t panic! This is one of the most common issues for resin artists—especially beginners. Let’s explore the real reasons why your resin isn’t curing and how to fix them with simple, proven tips.
1. Incorrect Resin & Hardener Ratio
Problem: Not measuring the correct 1:1 (or 2:1) ratio.
Fix: Always use digital scales or clearly marked measuring cups. Eyeballing the amount often leads to soft, uncured resin. Read manufacturer instructions carefully.
2. Room Temperature Is Too Low
Problem: Resin requires a warm environment (above 21°C or 70°F).
Fix: Use a small room heater or resin-warming mat to maintain the proper curing temperature. Cold weather in India, especially during winters, can delay or stop curing altogether.
3. Expired or Contaminated Resin
Problem: Using old or poorly stored resin can result in failed curing.
Fix: Always check the expiry date and avoid exposing resin to humidity or dirt. Store your resin in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
4. Under-Mixing or Over-Mixing
Problem: Improper mixing results in chemical imbalance.
Fix: Stir both parts slowly and thoroughly for at least 3–5 minutes. Scrape the sides and bottom of your cup to ensure even blending.
5. Humidity Interference
Problem: High humidity can cause tacky surfaces or cloudy resin.
Fix: Use a dehumidifier in your studio during monsoon or humid seasons. Resin works best in a low-humidity environment.
6. Silicone Mold Issues
Problem: Cheap or oily molds may repel resin or prevent proper curing.
Fix: Use high-quality silicone molds made for resin art. Clean them with rubbing alcohol before each use.
7. Wrong Type of Resin
Problem: Using the wrong kind of resin for your project.
Fix: Coating resin and casting resin are not interchangeable. Make sure you’re using the correct formula for jewelry, deep pours, or topcoating.
Bonus: How to Save Uncured Resin
Sometimes, you can fix slightly sticky resin by:
- Scraping off uncured areas
- Sanding the surface
- Recoating with a properly mixed layer
Note: Fully liquid resin usually can’t be saved and must be discarded.
